To enjoy smooth, uninterrupted streaming, your internet connection must meet certain speed requirements. The required speed depends on two key factors:
-
The video quality (resolution) you want to stream
-
The number of screens/devices streaming at the same time
If your internet speed is below the recommended level, you may experience buffering, freezing, or drops in video quality.
Recommended Speeds by Video Quality
| Video Quality | Resolution | Recommended Download Speed (per screen) |
|---|---|---|
| SD (Standard Definition) | 720 × 480 (480p) | 3 Mbps |
| HD (High Definition) | 1280 × 720 (720p) | 5 Mbps |
| Full HD | 1920 × 1080 (1080p) | 10 Mbps |
| UHD / 4K (Ultra HD) | 3840 × 2160 (2160p) | 25 Mbps |
Per Screen / Multi-Screen Usage
-
Per Screen Requirement: The speeds listed above apply to each screen/connection.
Example: If you have a 5-Screen plan and all 5 devices are streaming in Full HD (1080p), you need at least:
10 Mbps × 5 screens = 50 Mbps. -
Higher Quality = Higher Bandwidth:
If all 5 screens are streaming UHD/4K (2160p), the requirement jumps to:
25 Mbps × 5 screens = 125 Mbps. -
ISP vs. Real Speeds: Your ISP’s advertised speed is often a “maximum” speed. Real-world speeds may be lower due to network congestion, Wi-Fi interference, or multiple users sharing bandwidth. Always allow a buffer above the minimum.
Other Considerations
-
Network Sharing: Other devices (phones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, gaming consoles, smart home devices, etc.) also consume bandwidth. Be sure to account for these when calculating your total internet needs.
-
Upload Speed: While streaming mainly depends on download speed, upload speed affects activities like video calls, cloud backups, and online gaming. A slow upload speed can also indirectly affect streaming stability.
-
Wi-Fi vs. Wired: Wi-Fi connections may provide less consistent speeds due to interference and distance from the router. A wired Ethernet connection offers the most stable performance, especially for UHD/4K.
-
Router Capacity: Even if your ISP provides enough bandwidth, an older or low-end router may not handle multiple high-definition streams at once. Make sure your home network equipment supports your plan’s speed.
Quick Summary
-
SD (480p): 3 Mbps per screen
-
HD (720p): 5 Mbps per screen
-
Full HD (1080p): 10 Mbps per screen
-
UHD/4K (2160p): 25 Mbps per screen
-
Multiply per screen: Example → 5 Full HD screens = 50 Mbps minimum
-
Plan for extra devices: Phones, tablets, smart TVs, etc. all consume bandwidth
By ensuring your internet speed and home network equipment meet these requirements, you’ll enjoy a smooth, buffer-free streaming experience.
